About

Go confidently in the direction of your dreams! Live the life you’ve imagined.”

― Henry David Thoreau

Bonjour et bienvenue!

The Thoreau quote sums up my personal philosophy: To pursue my dreams and live a life with as few regrets as possible.

My passion for writing and French language and culture inspired me to start this blog. Joie de Vivre celebrates food, travel, and joyful everyday living. Joyful living is an attitude, a philosophy, a lifestyle, and, ultimately, a choice. I love cooking, traveling, and spending family time with L’Husband and Le Chien, a mischievous miniature dachshund named Charlie Brown.

Living the life I imagined is a work in progress. Following my dreams led me from a childhood in Alabama to living and working in New York City, Chicago, Milwaukee, Vermont, and downstate Illinois, where I am a professor at the University of Illinois School of Information Sciences. I have worked at law firms, libraries, universities, yoga studios, and one florist. Through it all, I’ve tried to find pleasure in the simple things that can make daily life so special.

Like living the life I imagined, joyful living is a process. And part of my process is making lists and rearranging closets!
