Joyful Living

My Happy at Home Basket

Bonjour!

I spend a lot of time at home by choice – I’m a natural-born homebody – and by necessity – the COVID-19 pandemic has me (mostly) sheltering in place with a newborn, a dachshund, and my reentry anxiety cranked up to eleven.

I’ve always loved being at and making a home. When I was a child, “playing Barbies” meant setting up the Barbie house, to the amusement of my parents and confusion of my playmates. Home is my sanctuary, my safe haven, my happy place.

A Happy Basket for My Happy Place

As part of my commitment to joyful living every day, I recently made what I call a “happy at home” basket. This basket corrals everyday necessities and treats to make life at home a little more pleasant, fun, and convenient.

I first read about creating such a basket many years ago in the books of lifestyle maven extraordinaire Alexandra Stoddard. When I was pregnant earlier this year, my friend Kelly in Vermont told me she had a basket with essentials she carried around the house as she tended to a newborn and recommended I do the same.

After thinking about this project for years and now caring for a bébé of my own as a full time stay-at-home mom, I finally made my own happy basket. As summer changes to fall and we celebrate la rentrée, it feels like the right time to embrace a new habit enhances le quotidien.

Essentials for My Happy Basket

Starting with a basket hand-woven by my mom’s supremely creative and talented friend, Nancy, I added the following everyday essentials to make life happier:

  • Hand cream
  • Lip balm
  • Tissues
  • Pen and note pad
  • Book
  • Small Bluetooth speaker
  • Headphones/earbuds
  • Baby toy
  • Bobby pins
  • Tylenol
  • Cloth for cleaning glasses
  • Snack(s)

These are just what works for me. There is no right or wrong way to curate your own happy basket, whether for home or for work (or working from home!).

Snacks could include nuts, granola bars, or graham crackers. All that really matters is doing a little something nice for yourself and enhancing daily pleasure.

What would you put in a happy basket to make your home or office life more fun and convenient?

Merci for reading and please subscribe and share!

À votre santé,

Katie
